Review and Assessment of Failure Models Applicable to Ballistic Impact Simulations of Ductile Materials
Abstract
A literature review was conducted to evaluate failure models for ductile materials. The focus was on failure models that could be used in numerical simulations of ballistic impact. The assessment examined the number of constitutive parameters required by the model, the types of characterizations tests required, and the underlying physics of the model. The Johnson-Cook damage model because of its general acceptance and wide use, was used was a baseline for comparisons. A recommendation is made concerning possible improvement in replicating failure modes observed in ballistic experiments.
