Inlet Flow Analysis of a Transonic Compressor
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to accurately determine the inlet flow field characteristics of a transonic compressor rig, as well as develop a method to provide accurate and reliable measurements of upstream throttle setting. In order to properly determine the flow field characteristics in the inlet region, probes were designed to be inserted into the casing of the compressor rig. These probes were designed to contain Kulite pressure transducers, as well as total pressure ports, in order to provide measurements of pressure and pressure unsteadiness. In addition, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the compressor inlet ducting was created to model the inlet flow at full open and near stall conditions. CFD results were compared to experimental results from prior research with hot film anemometry. In order to reliably and accurately provide throttle setting measurements, two optical encoders were installed and integrated into the transonic compressor rig, allowing for continuous, precise determination of the throttle setting.
