Accelerated Learning and Engineering Research Training (ALERT) Program in Cyber and Electronic Warfare for Undergraduate Midshipmen and Cadets
Abstract
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (U of I) originally proposed to train 10 to 14 undergraduate students, specifically ROTC midshipmen and cadets, in the areas of cyber and electronic warfare research through the ALERT (Accelerated Learning and Engineering Research Training) Program in Cyber and Electronic Security. The program entailed two phases. In the first phase, students developed their background knowledge and trained to use equipment/software and perform laboratory techniques. In the second phase, students applied what they have learned in the first phase and conducted research. We also planned to offer multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary research experiences to the students. In collaboration with our faculty members and graduate students, we were able to offer 15 multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary research projects and trained a total of 37 (unique)undergraduate students. Figure 1 shows the number of students for each academic year and summer term. Seven research projects were offered from fall 2021 to spring 2023. Our first cohort of undergraduate students (n=12) in fall 2021 to spring 2022 were all ROTC midshipmen and cadets. Our second cohort of undergraduate students (n=9) included ROTC students and students from underrepresented groups in STEM. These students participated in the program from fall 2022 to spring 2023. We also supported undergraduate students in summer 2022 (n=3) and summer 2023 (n=15). In fall 2023, we had seven (7) students continue working on their research projects that they started in summer 2023.
