Exploratory Study of the Decomposition and Combustion Process of Ionically Conducting Gel and Solid Propellants

Abstract

On demand control of propellants and energetic materials in general is of great interest and importance. In this work, we systematically studied the electrochemical decomposition of solid oxidizers. Then, we synthesized and characterized polymer electrolyte propellants in both gel and solid form. We have identified key pathways for ignition and throttling of propellant combustion. In addition, we have identified compositions which will extinguish when electrical power is removed even at elevated pressure. Finally, we explored the role of additives in terms of ignition, combustion, and quenching of propellants.
