Development of a Photonic Field-Programmable Gate Array (pFPGA) for Software-Controlled Photonics

Abstract

Field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) have revolutionized many areas of electronics, with the creation of dedicated circuit prototypes and machine learning accelerators being just two examples. In this program, we are developing a new generation of photonic FPGAs (pFPGA)for programmable photonic circuits. The core of the p FPGA is a packaged programmable many-mode interferometer (PMMI), which can implement any 20x20 linear optical transformation. We have developed a core control interface and a novel error-correcting algorithm to enable programmable circuits with a fidelity exceeding 99.9 percent and long-term stability enabled by in-situ feedback. We are collaborating with members of the American photonics community to make the pFPGA available to initial proof of concept projects (in particular in an application of quantum communication switches).
