U.S. and USSR MHD Electrode Materials Development

Abstract

The USSR has had a large MHD materials-development program for a number of years. Many materials have been studied, but with only limited success. The large MHD materials testbed facilities used in the Soviet program are unique, and provide the USSR with an excellent capability for testing and evaluating promising candidate materials in a realistic commercial MHD environment. Although neither country's MHD materials research program has yet progressed to a sufficiently advanced stage to assess very precisely the relative state of the art, the U.S. and USSR appear to be at about the same level.
