A Users Manual for the AFWL Space Radiation Environment and Shielding Codes

Abstract

The Air Force Weapons Laboratory (AFWL) Space Radiation Environment and Shielding Codes (SPARES) that are used to calculate the natural space radiation environment have been intensively modified. The SPARES codes use a satellite's shielding distribution in conjunction with radiation transport calculations to obtain flux-to-dose conversion factors. These factors are then used in conjunction with trajectory and environment data to obtain the dose and dose rate in rad units at specified locations within the satellite over any time period. The dose conversion factors computed by the SPARES codes have been modified to be compatible with other AFWL codes. The latest models of the natural proton and electron space radiation environments have been incorporated. A thorough internal code documentation has been performed using comment cards. All machine language has been replaced with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) FORTAN, and with the exception of data statements, all coding has been converted to ANSI FORTRAN. A detailed user's manual has been prepared.
