Rare Earth Ion-Host Lattice Interactions. 13. Lanthanides in YA103

Abstract

Phenomenological even-fold crystal field parameters, B(km), are obtained for triply ionized Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm in Ya103 by diagonalizing a C(s) (C(1h)) crystal field Hamiltonian in a free-ion wave-function basis. These parameters are reduced to give the part of the crystal field components, A(km), due solely to the crystal lattice, and new B(km) are then calculated for all the lanthanides by using previously derived rho k, where B(km) = rho (k) a(km). The latter B(km) are used to calculate the energy levels of the lower J- multiplets for the lanthanide series in YA103.
