An Electro Optical MTI System for the Detection of Artificial Satellites (the NITH Finder)

Abstract

This report describes an electro-optical moving target indicator (MTI) system that was developed for the detection of satellites in deep space. The system operates on standard RS-170 video provided from a telescope mounted TV camera. The principle of operation is to remove stationary clutter background (stars), enhance signal to noise by integration of successive frames and provide automatic detection by means of constant false alarm rate (CFAR) thresholding in combination with majority logic correlation. A detailed description of the theory of operation as well as complete design details are given along with actual field test results.
