Chemical and Structural Relationships Among the Oligomeric Compounds MFe(CO)4 (M=Zn, Cd, Hg), PbFe(CO)4, AgCo(CO)4, and Their Lewis Base Adducts.
Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of the following new metal-metal bonded complexes are reported: (pyridine)3ZnFe(CO)4, (NH3)(2,2'-bipyridyl)ZnFe(CO)4, (2,2': 6',2'-terpyridyl)CdFe(CO)4, (2,2',2''=triaminotriethylamine)CdFe(CO)4, (2,2'-bipyridyl)ZnFe(CO)4, (4,4'-bipyridyl)CdFe(CO)4, and (4-phenylpyridine)CdFe(CO)4. Proper ligational strategy thus allows the isolation of several types of compounds which differ from the previously known B2CdFe(CO)4 and (NH3)3ZnFe(CO)4 patterns. It is also possible to manipulate the degree of association of these species by control of the group IIb metal ion coordination sphere. Thus the first four of the new compounds listed are tentatively assigned monomeric structures, while the latter three are assigned oligomeric structures. The present studies also reveal that AgCo(CO)4 is isomorphous with (CdFe(CO)4)4, and that (pyridine)2CdFe(CO)4 exists as a trimer in the solid state. The complex (2,2'-bipyridyl)AgCo(CO)4 is found to be partly associated in noncoordinating solvents. In the solid state, PbFe(CO)4 is associated. (Author)
