Processing Mechanisms, Structure and Morphology of High Temperature Polymeric Alloys. Part I.

Abstract

In the initial phase of this project the processing conditions expected to optimise interactions at a molecular level between poly (bisbenzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBB) and polybenzimidazole (PBI) were investigated. Studies of the mechanical properties and the morphology indicate that binary interactions between BBB-BBB, PBI-PBI and BBB-PBI all occur. Interactions of BBB-BBB occur at temperatures above 500 C while PBI-PBI and BBB-PBI interactions occur at lower temperatures. Separation of these interactions should be possible by varying the processing conditions between temperatures of 350 and 550 C and by using a range of composites prepared both dry-blending and co-precipitation of the two polymers.
