An Integral-Equation Solution for a Bounded Elastic Body with an Edge Crack: Mode I Deformations.

Abstract

The quadrature form solution for a pressurized semi-infinite crack in an infinite lammina and the boundary-integral equation solution of an unflawed medium are combined to solve the problem of an edge crack in a bounded, two-dimensional medium under mode I conditions. The formulation allows for the direct evaluation of the stress intensity factor. Algorithms for the numerical solution of the integral equations are developed and applied to several illustrative problems. Results obtained agree well with exact and other numerical solutions.
