Performance of Commercially Available Flame Arrestors for Butane/Air and Gasoline/Air Mixtures

Abstract

Tests were undertaken in order to provide the U.S. Coast Guard with an empirical basis for evaluating gasoline/air flame arrestors. The study was intented to be used as background information for design, inspection, and maintenance of cargo tank venting systems. Several commerically available arrestors were found to be effective in quenching butane/air flames up to 200 ft/sec flame speed and gasoline vapor/air flames up to 125 ft/sec flame speed.
