Failure Analysis Investigation of NIKE-HERCULES Hoisting Chain.

Abstract

The failure of the hoisting chain used on the NIKE-HERCULES System was investigated to determine the cause of failure. The metallurgical and mechanical exploitation of the chain revealed an overloading condition as the cause of failure. The ultimate tensile load of the chain exceeded the working load requirement by a factor of 6. (Author)
