Investigation of Methods to Eliminate Voltage Delay in Li/SOCL2 Cells.

Abstract

The rate of growth of lithium chloride films on lithium in thionyl chloride containing 1.8 M LiAlCl4 and 1.8 M LiAlCl4 with 0.001 M AlCl3 has been measured at 25 C, 55 C, and 72 C, using a pulse technique. The measured capacitance and micropolarization were used to calculate the thickness and resistivity of the films. It has been found to date that the rate of growth slows drastically after a few days of standing and the films assume a nearly constant thickness. This thickness is less when a slight excess of AlCl3 is present, but not when the storage temperature is lower. The polyhedral borate salts Li2B10Cl10 and Li2B12Cl12 have been synthesized from decaborane according to techniques described in the literature. Similar measurements of LiCl film growth on lithium in SOCl2 containing these salts are planned. (Author)
