Field Emission Cold Cathode Devices Based on Eutectic Systems.

Abstract

A survey has been made of the performance as field emission cold cathodes of selected refractory materials fabricated as needle arrays by unidirectional solidification. Specially designed apparatus was used to observe the operating lifetimes and Fowler-Nordheim functions of needle arrays of niobium carbide, tantalum carbide in a nichrome matrix and of a gamma/gamma primed - alpha eutectic in the Ni Mo Ta Al system. The results are co-related with SEM observations. Thermodynamic stabilities under the operating conditions are discussed. (Author)
