Fiber Optic Couplers.

Abstract

The purpose of this contract is to conduct research and development of new fabrication techniques for couplers for use with single strand multimode optical fiber waveguides. The structures investigated under this contract were directional couplers and 8 by 8 planar transmission star couplers. Both theoretical and experimental characterization of the 8 by 8 transmission couplers were made. The waveguide structures were fabricated on a Nd-rich glass substrate using an ion-exchange process. The structure patterns were formed on the substrate by means of photolithography. Limited experiments demonstrating the fabrication of thick films by chemical vapor deposition on silica were also performed.
