A Procedure for Calculation of the Pressure Along the Axis of a Tip Vortex.

Abstract

The generation of vortical flow abreast the lateral edge and downstream of a lifting surface is examined from the basic equations of fluid mechanics using the Oseen approximation. Coupled equations which arise from matching inner and outer expansions about a conical region are derived. Their numerical solution (not attempted here) is expected to provide a more accurate prediction of the pressure distribution along the vortex axis and, hence, to a reliable prediction of inception of tip cavitation as a function of Reynolds number, and the loading on the lifting surface in the vicinity of the tip.
