Integrated Optical Logic Gates. A Demonstration of Four Optical Logic Functions.

Abstract

An optical NOT gate has been demonstrated, exhibiting close to 100% modulation and requiring a minimum of 1.2 V for switching between states. An optical AND gate has been demonstrated, using two interferometric intensity modulators in series. A device functioning as either an optical EXCLUSIVE OR gate or an even parity generator has been demonstrated, also exhibiting nearly 100% modulation. Lithium niobate cleaving and polishing techniques were examined, indicating further research is required in this area. (author)
