A Review of Advanced Acoustic Emission Sensors

Abstract

This report describes work done to evaluate emerging, advanced sensors for detection of acoustic emission from fatigue crack growth. This task is part of an overall project whose objective is to develop acoustic emission monitoring of fatigue crack growth in aircraft. Section 1, the operation of each candidate sensor is summarized. Section 2 describes the criteria used to evaluate the suitability of each sensor for near-term use on this acoustic emission project. Recommendations are provided regarding which sensor concepts appear to be most promising within the context of the project's needs. The appendices contain papers that were submitted to Battelle by various experts discussing the sensor concepts.
