The Mesosphere and Thermosphere,

Abstract

This publication contains a number of specialized papers on two topics. The first topic is representation of energy sources in the Earth's upper atmosphere and ionosphere. The energy sources include the solar wind and electromagnetic radiation, particle precipitation, joule heating in the electrojets, and energy transfer by gravity wave dissipation. The second topic is concerned with models of the terrestrial upper atmosphere. The subdivisions include the stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. Properties considered are total mass density, composition, radiative cooling, temperature, winds, diffusion, and turbulence. (Author)
