Field Emission Cold Cathode Devices Based on Eutectic Systems
Abstract
A survey has been made of the performance as field emission cold cathodes of selected refractory materials fabricated as needle arrays by unidirectional solidification. Cathodes based upon refractory metal carbides have been fabricated and tested. Performance data has been obtained using niobium, tantalum and vanadium carbides with various cathode geometries. Life times of over 1,000 hours and current densities of up to 1 A/sq. cm. have been obtained. Preliminary experiments indicated that LaB6 can be formed into platelets by conventional cooling in an aluminum matrix and that directional solidification should produce suitable rod-like morphology.
