Development of Automatic Inflation Devices for Life Preservers.

Abstract

This historical description covers the various commands and countries involved in development of automatic inflation devices (with a manual override) that would inflate a life preserver automatically on water contact when the wearer enters the water and is incapable of manually inflating his preserver. These developments began when a number of military personnel involved in deck and ejection seat aircraft operations at sea became convinced that a disabled person, wearing a life preserver, might have a much better chance of survival if the life preserver inflated automatically after the wearer was in the water.
