A Stepped-Frequency HF Radar for Ionospheric Diagnostics

Abstract

Naturally occurring ionospheric disturbances generate structure over an extremely large range of scale sizes and intensities. To diagnose the interacting plasma processes that cause this structure continuum requires a variety of complex instruments. This report describes a multiple-frequency HF backscatter radar that can measure the Doppler spectrum of structure in the scale-size region from tens of meters to meters. This structure regime is important in its own right and acts as tracer for macroscale parameters such as plasma depletions, currents, and electric fields.
