Friction Measurement by Means of a Gyroscopic Mass.

Abstract

Previous theoretical and experimental studies have demonstrated that when a bored sphere is contained within a spinning cavity, the sphere will rotate so that its major axis of inertia is aligned with the axis of spin of the cavity. Under certain conditions, the time required for alignment is inversely proportional to the coefficient of sliding friction. The objective of this investigation has been to investigate this phenomenon as a method for determination of the coefficient of sliding friction between various materials. An experimental apparatus was designed and built and tests were conducted in order to evaluate the basic theoretical premise. (Author)
