Transport Index Limits for Shipments of Radioactive Material in Passenger-Carrying Aircraft

Abstract

This handbook contains figures that show, for most types of air carrier aircraft, the cargo compartment dimensions, distances between cargo compartments, and distances between cargo compartments and overhead passenger compartments. It contains charts that show the maximum allowable sum of transport indexes for a cargo area as related to (i) the height of the tallest package with a radioactive yellow label in the area, and (ii) the distance between the cargo floor and the passenger floor. It also contains charts for use with a system of predesignated areas that include the distance between predesignated areas as well as items (i) and (ii) above. Solved problems are provided as a teaching aid to facilitate use of the figures and charts in determining the transport index limit for individual cargo areas and for an entire aircraft. The material in this handbook will be useful to FAA inspectors in training and in the field and to airline personnel.
