Densification of Precipitated Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) to Achieve Translucent Properties.
Abstract
Precipitated yttria (8.0 wt%) stabilized zirconia powders (YSZ) were sintered in the range 1150 degrees C-1350 degrees C using Al2O3 and B2O3 additions. A (2:1) Al2O3:B2O3 additive mixture at approximately 2 vol % concentration, gave highest densities when sintered at 1200 degrees C/1 hr. Washing of the powders to remove residual C1 was necessary to achieve high densification below 1300 degrees C. Samples obtained were optically translucent at 1 mm thickness with average grain size 0.2-0.4 microns. Pore size increased with sintering temperature but numbers were significantly reduced. Densification by liquid phase sintering was evident with B2O3 present, but mechanisms for Al2O3 additions were not clearly established. (Author)
