Special Course on V/STOL Aerodynamics

Abstract

The aim of this course was to outline and discuss the additional knowledge of aerodynamics needed to embark on the design of V/STOL aircraft. The influence of V/STOL features on wing design, layout considerations, engine and air intake considerations, effects of jet effluxes, wind tunnel and flight testing, manoeuvrability and control, performance assessment and special aspects of flight aerodynamics were discussed by nine lecturers. Topics included: Some Jet Interference Phenomena Relevant to V/STOL Aircraft; Influence of V/STOL on Wing Tailplane Designs; Layout Considerations and Types of V/STOL Aircraft; V/ stol Propulsion System Aerodynamics; Jet Flowfields; V/STOL Maneuverability and Control; V/STOL Wind-tunnel Testing; Ground Based Testing without Wind Tunnels; Aerodynamics of V/STOL Aircraft - Performance assessment; Assessment of Aerodynamic Performance of V/STOL and STOVL Fighter Aircraft; Special Flight Aspects such as STO, Ski-jump and ODM.
