A Field Blending Guide for Improving the Low Temperature Properties of Ground Diesel Fuels

Abstract

A field test to determine the Cloud Point of DF-2 diesel fuels has been developed to aid in the low temperature operation of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Some low temperature operability problems can be traced to the normal and/or branched hydrocarbons in the fuels which at low temperature will precipitate and become insoluble. The point when wax crystals first begin to precipitate is called the Cloud Point. Low temperature operability of vehicles and equipment is determined by the Cloud Point of the fuel. The procedures outlined in the report instruct the soldier in the field how to determine the Cloud Point, blending fuels to use, blending ratios, and blending procedures. This report should alleviate some of the low temperature operability problems experienced in the past.
