Gravity Gradiometer Survey Data Processing.

Abstract

This Technical Report describes a practical methodology for processing airborne gravity gradiometer survey data to estimate gravity disturbance vectors at the surface of the earth. The methodology also provides an error analysis of the disturbance estimates. Special consideration is given to the data processing and data documentation required for testing of the airborne Gravity Gradiometer Survey System (GGSS). As an example of the data processing methodology, a prototype data template is defined for the simplified problem of estimating the z (vertical) gravity disturbance from measurements of the zz gradient. This template is an interim example of the types of templates that are being developed in this study for processing real survey data. Gravity and measurement error covariance matrices (for the AWN worldwide gravity disturbance model) were computed for this prototype template. These matrices are sufficient for designing the optimal gravity disturbance estimator for the template and for computing its rms accuracy. (Author)
