State-of-the-Art Construction Technology for Deep Tunnels and Shafts in Rock

Abstract

This study was part of the initial planning efforts for the deep-based missile system, but the methods described are applicable to a wide range of projects and conditions. As far as possible, all the construction methods in this report are discussed from the point of view of production rates, costs, and appropriate conditions. All known methods for tunnel and shaft excavation, muck and material transport, support and lining, ground stabilization and ground-water control, and auxiliary operations are described. General guidelines are given to assist in the selection of specific methods and equipment. Manufacturer's specifications and cost and performance data are included in the appendices to assist in this selection and to support the statements and conclusions made in this report. Keywords: Tunneling techniques; Excavation techniques; Shafts(excavation); Underground construction.
