Maneuvering and Special Trials Results M/V BENYAURD.

Abstract

Full scale maneuvering trials were conducted on a river tow/barge flotilla on Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the summer of 1985. The trials were conducted in order to obtain tow maneuvering performance data for comparison with tow tank and simulator generated data. Calibration runs, turning maneuvers, horizontal overshoot maneuvers, acceleration add deceleration maneuvers, and lateral motion maneuvers were performed for three different tow/barge configurations. Water depth averaged 17 feet + or - 2 feet (4.6 meters + or - 0.6 meters) during the trials and the water depth to draft ratio was a nominal 1.9. Measurments obtained during the trials included steering and flanking rudder angle, port and starboard shaft speed, tow heading, tow turning rate, relative wind velocity, and tow position. Keywords: Towboat; Barge; M/V Benyaurd, Horizontal Overshoot; Acceleration and Deceleration; Lateral motion.
