Studies for Development of a Plastic Compression Ignition Fuze for 81 mm Mortar Practice Ammunition,

Abstract

Results of investigations conducted during 1985 on development of a plastic compression ignition (CI) fuze are described. Sensitivity and performance of both HE and pyrotechnic filled CI initiators are described, and suitable materials identified. Development work has been on RDX grade A filled initiators. The use of silicone rubber caps has partially overcome the desensitization upon thermal cycling observed in Fuze F7. Fuzes consisting of plastic components with an aluminium initiator have been successfully field tested. Initiators moulded from glass-filled noryl are not satisfactory and further plastics must be investigated in 1986.
