Abstract

The North Atlantic Regional Conference on the Beneficial Uses of Dredged Material was held in Baltimore, Md., on 12-14 May 1987. It was sponsored by the North Atlantic Division, US Army Corps of Engineers (CE), and the Baltimore District, CE. The conference was attended by over 200 representatives of local, county, State, and Federal agencies, private dredging, environmental, and maritime industries, port authorities, and concerned citizens' groups. The conference's primary objectives were to discuss past, present, and future beneficial use applications in the North Atlantic Division; to identify information and untested applications of beneficial uses of dredged material; and to contribute to the development of a logical beneficial uses strategy that can be reflected in long-term dredging planning and management. Attendees approached the conference as an information-seeking opportunity and as a chance to cooperatively discuss dredging and dredged material disposal management within the mid-Atlantic region. Keywords: Beach nourishment, Beneficial uses dredged material, Coastal wetlands, Long-term management strategies, Mid-Atlantic region, Water resources.
