A Penalty Element Formulation for Calculating Bulk Stress

Abstract

This report describes the formulation of a three-dimensional penalty element that uses the bulk stress at each node as a degree of freedom, in addition to the usual u, v, and w displacements. The penalty function method is used to define a modified energy functional that is constrained by the equation for bulk stress, and a solution is obtained by specifying stationarity of this modified functional. Edge-cracked and centre-cracked panels are modelled in order to investigate the practical implementation of the penalty element formulation and to compare the results with those obtained using standard methods.
