Rotorcraft Drivetrain Life Safety and Reliability (Cycle de Vie, Securite et Fiabilite des Chaines Dynamiques des Avions a Voilure Tournante)

Abstract

This report of two chapters of an originally intended comprehensive volume on Transmission Systems for Power Transfer in helicopters and Turboprops which could not be prepared as a whole. After a short introduction, the first chapter deals with lessons learned from accident data of large civil transport helicopters, and with recent improvements in design and component technology, including recommendations and safety benefits achievable by monitoring systems. In the second chapter, statistics of drive system life and reliability were discussed, allowing a proper evaluation of drive system designs and the understanding and control of mean life and life scatter of a drive system at the design stage. Keywords: Mechanical transmissions; Helicopter rotor drives, Helicopters; Helicopter engines; Turboshaft/turboprop engines; Drive shafts.
