Vertical-Tail Aerodynamic Configuration of Space Shuttle Orbiter

Abstract

From a discussion of the principle of the vertical-tail aerodynamic configuration of the Space Shuttle Orbiter in the preliminary design stage, and analysis of the vertical-tail aerodynamic configuration (including layout) of the present-day Space Shuttle Orbiter, the author clarified three possible modes of vertical-tail aerodynamic configuration of the Space Shuttle Orbiter, and the principal measures for the lateral-direction aerodynamic characteristics for an improved Space Shuttle Orbiter. These results have direct reference value on the aerodynamic configuration and the preliminary design on the exterior shape of the Space Shuttle Orbiter.
