Theoretical Manual for Analysis of Arch Dams

Abstract

This manual is a companion to Engineer Manual (EM) 11100-2-2201, 'Engineering and Design: Arch Dam Design' (Headquarters, Department of the Army 1993), and is intended to provide a theoretical background for the linear structural analysis of concrete arch dams. It is also designed to describe analytical procedures employed in the computer program, Graphics-Based Dam Analysis Program (GDAP) (Ghanaat 1993), and to provide an overview of the trial load method of arch dam design and analysis. The manual contains an overview and discussion of the general aspects of the finite element procedures, including system idealization, isoparametric element formulation, and solution techniques for the static and dynamic analyses of arch dams used in the computer program GDAP. It also presents general discussions on the concepts, assumptions, and limitations of the trial load method. Arch dam, Earthquake analysis, Trial load method, Dynamic analysis, Finite element,
