Software for Advanced Vision Systems.

Abstract

The goal of the Advanced Vision Systems program is to develop accelerators that provide a dramatic improvement in performance for applications in image understanding, automatic target recognition, real-time computer vision, and other domains with similar processing needs. This study addresses the question of what types of software support will be required to make the systems useful. After examining the needs of users in the various domains and reviewing available technology, we conclude that the following components are necessary: (1) a library of image processing primitives similar to that proposed for the Image Understanding Environment. (2) compilers and other tools for extending the library. (3) a GUI application builder in the style of KHOROS that allows library routines to be combined into larger applications interactively. (4) a run-time environment that allows complex sequences of operations to execute on the accelerator in parallel with host computation. The report concludes with a discussion of options for meeting these requirements and a discussion of problems that may arise.
