Formation of Focussed Space-Charge-Limited Electrons and Ion Beams,

Abstract

This report deals with the initial acceleration of intense beams of electrons or ions in such a way as to produce focussed beams. The theory is developed for the cylindrical case in which the emitter is long in one direction. The discussion will be written out explicitly for electrons but is applicable with obvious changes to space charge limited positive ion beams. The object of the calculations is to learn how to design the emitting surface and the related electrodes to produce narrowly focussed cathode ray beams. The basic arrangement under consideration is sketched.
