Portable Instrument Package (PORTAPAK) for the Measurement of Noise and Vibration,

Abstract

A portable, self-contained, instrument package (PORTAPAK) for recording noise and vibration environmental data in and around aircraft was developed. It was especially designed for use in field surveys where conditions limit the use of larger- and heavier recording equipment. The battery-operated recording system consists of a tape recorder and associated circuitry, a condenser microphone and a linear servo accelerometer as the vibration transducer. It weighs only 30 pounds and the overall dimensions are 17 inches wide, 14% inches deep and 51/2 inches high. Noise levels from 54 to 150 db SPL in the frequency range from 20 to 16,000 Hz and acceleration levels from 0.3 to 5 G in the frequency range from dc to 30 Hz can he measured. A complete description of the system is included and its performance characteristics for both the acoustical and vibration recording sec- tion are given.
