JA2 Electrothermal-Chemical (ETC) Firings with Modified 400-kJ Pulser.

Abstract

A 300-kJ pulse-forming network (PFN) with a pulse width of 1.2 ms was upgraded to 400-kJ maximum energy output and 2.4-ms pulse width by increasing the number of its six capacitors and by replacing its six inductors by larger ones. As the new pulser was desired to also provide the shorter original pulse of 1.2 ms, tests were performed in which only four of its eight new banks were left connected. A match of the new pulser output parameters was found when the new PFN charging was variated from 3 kV to 4 kV to match the same output energy levels as with the previous 300-kJ pulser. Also, the modified pulser showed that for a 1.2-ms pulse width and PFN charging voltages of 4 kV and 5 kV, there was a noticeable increase on the propellant (JA2 disks) burn rate when compared with previous pulser data.
