Studies on Diffraction Efficiency of Optically Addressed Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulators for Telescopes with Nonlinear Correction for Distortions

Abstract

This report results from a contract tasking Research Institute for Laser Physics as follows: The contractor will investigate experimental and theoretical studies of the factors limiting the diffraction efficiency of spatial light modulators with nematic liquid crystals that are used for correcting wavefront distortions; fabr and test two spatial light modulators with segnetoelectric smectic liquid crystals; perform experimental and theoretical studies of the factors limiting the diffraction efficiency of spatial light modulators with smectic liquid crystals that are used for correcting wavefront distortions. Design, fabricate and test spatial light modulators from nematic and segnetoelectric liquid crystals with optimized parameters as determined by steps (a through c).
