A Multimedia-Based System for Foreign Language Listening and Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

This report presents a conceptual and functional design for a multimedia-based system for foreign language listening and reading comprehension. It describes how integrating existing and proven multimedia and artificial intelligence technology, and the World Wide Web may provide an innovative and effective approach to foreign language learning in DoD. The proposed system uses speech and natural language processing technology to phonetically, morphologically, and typographically "enhance" authentic foreign language input. The goal is to extend and strengthen the language student's listening and reading comprehension ability. The functional design of the system is grounded in Second Language Acquisition theory.
