Feasibility Study: Integrated 100% Ultrasonic Pouch Inspection

Abstract

The objectives were to determine and document the technical and economic feasibility of using ultrasonic technology for inspection of food pouches to determine package integrity. Literature searches indicated successful use in some industries, but no experience in the packaged food industry. The alternatives are visual human inspection machine vision optical inspections, vacuum residence and decay measurements, and perhaps others. Current visual methods by human inspectors are less than totally successful, and the tasks are tedious. This project indicated that technically the ultrasonic techniques can be used for inspection of package integrity, but economically it is not as desirable as other technologies, especially considering that humans are now on hand, trainable, and flexible. Under the current conditions, there will be no further pursuit of this technology for inspection.
