Studies of Optical Spectral Holeburning Using Raman Coherent Population Trapping

Abstract

Under this grant, we have studied Raman coherent population trapping in a solid, with applications to five dimensional optical data storage. In particular, we have studied Raman spectral holeburning in Pr:YSO, which has properties suitable for optical data storage. During this period, we have made significant advances in our pursuit towards storage of optical information in this medium. In addition, we have stored and retrieved optical images in two amorphous hosts: polystyrene doped with the dye chlorin-e6, and polymethylmethalacrylate doped with the dye phenanthraquinone The work has resulted in eleven journal publications and 10 conference presentations. The basic results are summarized below.
