Japan-America Frontiers of Engineering Symposium 2000

Abstract

On November 2%, 2000, 60 outstanding Japanese and American engineers from industry, academia, government labs, and other research institutions gathered for the First Japan-America Frontiers of Engineering Symposium (JAFOE) in Nara, Japan. Convened by the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ), and the Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST), this exciting and unique meeting included presentations and discussion of leading-edge research and technical work in four areas: earthquake engineering, ceramics, manufacturing, and biotechnology. The primary purpose of this book is to convey something about the content of the meeting through abstracts of the presentations and other meeting materials reprinted herein, as well as to inform the reader about the underpinning philosophy of the Frontiers of Engineering program.
