Chemoprevention Trial of Selenium and Prostate Cancer

Abstract

The principal purpose of this trial is to assess the potential for the essential nutrient selenium (Se) to modulate biomarkers of prostate cancer between initial diagnostic biopsy and radical prostatectomy. The scope of work is to randomize at least 110 participants to either a placebo or Se dosages of 200 micrograms, or 400 micrograms/day. Recruitment is continuing as a result of a one-year no-cost extension. A total of 46 subjects have been randomized. Of these, 43 have completed the study, 2 dropped before completing the study, and one is in the process of completing the study.
