Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM) at the Timbuktu Academy

Abstract

We present the objectives, approach, and accomplishments of the Timbuktu Academy. We claim to have established a scientific approach to systemic mentoring. Our accomplishments include the production of 106 SEM Bachelor's degree holders (61 from 1994 to 1998 and 45 from 1998 to 2001). 104 of them are African Americans. Well over half of our 106 alumni earned or are successfully pursuing advanced degrees, including the Ph.D. We published well over 50 articles (20 in physics and 11 in mentoring from 1999 to 2001). We made over 100 presentations (58 from 1993 to 1998 and 55 from 1999 to 2001). We utilized our scientific approach to produce 10 National Merit/National Achievement, minority, pre-college scholars in 2000 and 11 in 2001! We submit that ONR and the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) should pay attention to the Bagayoko, Zhao, and Williams procedure for the prediction of properties of materials, includin molecules clusters semiconductors and nuclei (in the shell model).
