Human Factors Assessment of the UH-60M Crew Station During the Early User Demonstration Number 2 (EUD2)

Abstract

Pilot workload, situational awareness (SA), and the pilot-vehicle interface (PVI) characteristics associated with the UH-60M Black Hawk crew station simulator were assessed during the Early User Demonstration No. 2. Additionally, simulator sickness was assessed to determine if the pilots experienced discomfort during missions and if the discomfort affected their perceived levels of workload and SA. Four highly experienced utility helicopter (UH)-60 pilots conducted a series of three different mission scenarios over the course of three days. Pilot feedback, which was obtained via a comprehensive questionnaire battery, showed that for the missions flown, workload in the UH-60M was comparable to the workload pilots experience in the UH-60A/L. Workload results showed that UH-60 aircrew training manual tasks related to digital messages and electronic radio navigation generated higher perceived workload in the UH-60M than in the A/L model. SA was reported to be similiar to the UH-60A/L, but major gains were reported from the digital mapping system. the pilots noted several problems with the PVI, which should be resolved. Pilots experienced very mild simulator sickness symptoms. A panel of subject matter experts independently observed and evaluated each mission and reported that pilots experienced low to moderated levels of workload during the missions and moderate levels of SA. Finally, and eye tracker system was used to assess visual gaze during several of the trials. The visual gaze data were used to assess visual workload.
